The varieties to choose from are extensive. I try to direct my clients to woods that are naturally the color they are after, using stains as a last resort.
The predominant species people choose for kitchens, for example, are maple, cherry and for some white or red oak and clear Doug fir.
My list includes: Alder Ash Cedar - Western Red Cherry - Premium heart Beech Douglas Fir - mostly cvg Hickory - plain or calico Holly - for inlay work Maple - eastern & western, plain & figured Mahogany - central & south American, including a farmed variety called Liptus Makore - African wood very much like Cherry White Oak - quartered, plain & figured Red Oak - quartered or plain Pine - yellow, knotty Black Walnut - western figured or eastern plain
